In the 1985 non-partisan general elections conducted in Pakistan under Muhammad Zia-ul-military Haq’s rule, Qureshi was elected for the first time from Multan to the Provincial Assembly of Punjab. In 1986, he became a member of the Pakistan Muslim League.
In the 2018 Pakistani general election, he was re-elected to the National Assembly as the PTI candidate in Constituency NA-156 (Multan-III). He became the PTI’s choice for the position of Speaker of the National Assembly after winning his election. According to reports, Imran Khan persuaded him to accept the position due of his extensive legislative background. Qureshi, though, seems hesitant to accept the position.
Qureshi was appointed Minister for Foreign Affairs after Imran Khan officially unveiled his federal cabinet composition on August 18.
