ISLAMABAD: In a time of soaring inflation and the rising cost of living, the electricity users of Karachi would likely get a substantial drop of Rs9.71 per unit in power bills due to fuel costs and quarterly changes.

According to a statement provided by the regulator, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) will hold a public hearing on November 30 on a petition submitted by K-Electric (KE) about fuel cost adjustment (FCA) for October 2022 and quarterly adjustment for July-September 2022.

Since July, KE has submitted four consecutive petitions for a negative FCA, requesting a price decrease of Rs1.88 per unit for October 2022.

KE has also asked that the regulator permit a decrease in the rate of Rs7.83 per unit as part of the quarterly adjustment for July-September 2022.

The emphasis of the hearing will be on whether or not the gasoline price fluctuation is justifiable. In addition, it will consider whether the sought quarterly variation is reasonable and if KE implemented the merit order while operating its power plants and purchasing energy from outside sources.

In October 2022, users of other power distribution companies (DISCOs) would see a rate hike of Rs0.2457 per unit due to FCA.

According to a petition submitted on behalf of DISCOs by the Central Power Purchasing Agency-Guarantee (CPPA-G), the unit cost of fuel increased by Rs0.2457.
