Donald Trump’s infamous Twitter account was resurrected Saturday after Elon Musk, the platform’s new owner, conducted a poll in which a small majority of respondents approved the decision, just days after the former US president began another White House candidacy.
Trump’s account was blocked from the network in early 2018 for his participation in the January 6 assault on the US Capitol by a mob of his supporters wanting to reverse the 2020 election results.
“The people have spoken, and Trump will be restored,” Musk tweeted immediately after the conclusion of a 24-hour Twitter vote on his account.
0he wrote, echoing a Latin aphorism he also shared on Friday, which translates as “The voice of the people is the voice of God.”
Finally, more than 15 million people voted on whether to restore the contentious profile, of 237 million daily Twitter users, with 51.8% in favor and 48.2% against.
Trump, who had over 88 million followers on Twitter when his account was disabled, thrived in using it as a voice throughout his administration, tweeting policy announcements, criticizing political opponents, and engaging with supporters.
Several of his political friends emphasized his homecoming on Saturday.
“Welcome back, @realdonaldtrump!” House Republican Paul Gosar tweeted.
Musk’s poll asked for a simple “yes” or “no” reaction to the billionaire Twitter CEO’s Friday comment “Reinstate former President Trump.”
“Fascinating to watch Twitter Trump poll!” In a series of tweets Saturday morning, Musk pondered the controversial and hard-charging new owner of the one-to-many messaging network.
He has already conducted similar polls, asking fans last year whether he should sell shares in his electric vehicle firm, Tesla. He sold more than $1 billion in stock due to the survey.
