Pakistan beat India in the men’s T20 world cup for the first time after five losses. It was also the first time Pakistan won 13 ODI or T20 matches against India.
This victory was Pakistan’s first in men’s T20Is by a ten-wicket margin, and India’s first in this format. Pakistan became the fourth side in men’s T20 World Cup history to win by 10 wickets.
Pakistan successfully chased down a 152-run target against India, the second-highest chase in men’s Twenty20 Internationals without losing a wicket. When Kane Williamson and Martin Guptill shared an undefeated 171-run opening stand against Pakistan in 2016, New Zealand set a new record.
Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam’s undefeated opening partnership of 152* is currently the greatest in the men’s T20 World Cup. The previous high was 145 by Chris Gayle and Devon Smith in a 2007 match against South Africa. It is also the second-highest level of collaboration.
In the T20I format, Pakistan has three 150-run partnerships, all of which are between Babar and Rizwan for the first wicket. The only other combo with several 150-plus partnerships in this format is Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan. In T20Is, Babar-Rizwan also became the first duo to put up a 150-run stand against India.
Rizwan’s undefeated 79* is currently Pakistan’s greatest score in a men’s T20 World Cup debut, while Babar’s 68* is the second-highest. Only Nasir Jamshed (56 against New Zealand in 2012) had a fifty on Pakistan’s T20 World Cup debut before this match.
Babar’s undefeated 68* against Sri Lanka in 2007 is the best score by a Pakistan skipper in the men’s T20 World Cup, surpassing Shoaib Malik’s 57. It’s also the second-highest score in the men’s T20 World Cup, trailing only Chris Gayle’s 88 against Australia in 2009.
Virat Kohli had earlier became the first Indian captain to register a fifty in the men’s T20 World Cup, and he and Babar had also become the first set of captains to score fifties in the same game.
The Indian openers scored 3 runs in this game, their lowest total in a men’s T20 World Cup game. The previous low was five runs, also against Pakistan in the 2007 edition’s group stage encounter.
Shaheen Shah Afridi has 22 wickets in 59 T20 innings when he has bowled the opening over. No other player has taken more than 13 wickets in the opening over of a T20 innings since he made his T20 debut in February 2018.
Pakistan’s playing XI has 614 T20I caps against India, making them the most experienced T20I XI in terms of T20I caps. Bangladesh’s previous most experienced XI, who played against Scotland last Sunday, had 550 caps (caps before the match).
